An outing in the mountains that will please young and old.
Look it up in Wikipedia or on the site itself.
There is only one commerce in Orthevielle and it’s the restaurant “La Ferme d’Orthe”. We find it a high level for a very decent price. We recommend it. Opening hours in July- August are at noon from Tuesday to Sunday and in the evening from Tuesday to Saturday.
There are quite a few Michelin-starred restaurants in the area, in Saint-Vincent-de-Tyrosse, Bayonne, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, … Just be ware to reserve in advance.
If you go to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port don’t forget to go to “Domaine Brana”, they have excellent wines and their “eau-de-vie” (Vielles Prunes, Poire Williams) are exceptional. – http://www.brana.fr/
Near to Pau you will find the Jurançon region where “Domaine de Souch” is my reference. http://www.domainedesouch.com/web/
One of the world’s most important sites of pilgrimage.
There are some beautiful beaches on the coast, but beware that in that area they have organised world surf championships, which means strong waves and currents. Never go swimming in that ocean ! It’s ok if you just like playing in the waves, but keep the kids supervised and only go in the water at supervised beaches.
If you really want to go swimming or have some calm water for the kids, go to the beaches in a bay : San Sebastian – Spain, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Hendaye or the lake of Hossegor.
Beautiful town to visit, with a nice beach, but very crowded in high season.
If you have the bad luck of bad weather, take a look at the weather forecast In San Sebastian, sometimes the weather is completely different on the other side of the Pyrenees. There is a beautiful beach, the very nice old town, the fabulous aquarium (very popular with children and very popular with everybody when it’s raining), there are Michelin starred restaurants and also simple restaurants where you can eat the famous “tapas”
Take a walk by the seaside from the “Plage du Miramar”, “Grande Plage”, the old fisher port to the “Rocher de la Vierge”. Good hot chocolate in brasserie “Casino Barrière”. Some restaurants in the old fisher port. We ate very well several times at “Chez Albert”, but it wasn’t in high season.
A canyon accommodated so that everyone can easily walk this trail. Take a look in Google.
A mythical mountain for the Basque people on the border of France with Spain. For young and old, you’ll have a marvellous panorama on top (check the weather forecast !) You can go up and down the mountain with a little train. Take some sweaters and wind breakers, it’s colder up there than down below (and the young ones will never believe you when you say this). And the more physically aspiring of your group could descend on foot (2 hours, don’t get lost and wear good hiking shoes) and the really tough ones can also ascend it on foot.
This is the absolute top for adolescents, but it’s rather expensive. And you will only get a reasonable confirmation of the feasibility (depending on the forecast of the winds) one or two days before and definitive confirmation in the morning. It’s more or less at 1 hour by car to get there
It’s certainly no dangerous wild water rafting. Depending of the water level it’s rather calm, fun to be in the water when it’s hot. It’s more or less at 45 minutes by car to get there. http://www.rafting-pyrenees.fr/ – http://www.ohlala-eauxvives.fr/
The market of Peyrehorade on Wednesday morning (since 1358)
